North Anchorage, Golden Gate Bridge

This is a painting I've been mulling over for several months. The Golden Gate Bridge is an icon, and has been depicted in many ways. I usually avoid subjects that are well known, unless I can find a new approach to them. This view from the hill at Vista Point has been done many times. I tried to differentiate it by a somewhat unusual composition, and most of all conveying atmosphere and mood.
22" x 11", watercolor on 140 lb. Arches cold press paper

  1. Michael, this is so amazing. I don't think anyone but you would have thought to compose a painting of the bridge like this - its magic. The positive of the towers of the bridge reaching upward at the upper right against the negative of the channel flowing in on the bottom left of the anchorage - this creates such a graceful tension.

  2. Thanks Wren. I did struggle with many studies to find a novel approach to this view. I also did move things around a bit too. I'm glad you like it.
